English Listening Practice with Live Radio
For English listening practice, choose one live radio segment and listen for its main idea before trying to catch every word. A short news bulletin works well for a quick session, while an interview or radio drama gives you longer stretches of speech.
A 10-minute listening routine
- Listen for the gist for 3 minutes. Ask what the story is about and who is involved. Keep listening when you miss a word.
- Listen for detail for 5 minutes. Note a name, a place and one fact that explains what happened. If the subject changes, write down the new topic.
- Summarise for 2 minutes. Pause and say two sentences in English. Use one for the main idea and one for a supporting detail.
Choose material you want to hear again tomorrow
- Short news
- Try BBC World Service or ABC News Radio. Dates, places and names give you concrete details to listen for.
- Interviews and discussion
- Try BBC Radio 4 or CBC Radio One Toronto. Listen for where a speaker introduces an opinion, example or disagreement.
- Radio drama
- Look for BBC Radio 4 Extra. Follow who is speaking and what changed in a scene.
Can I use this for IELTS or TOEFL?
Use radio alongside exam-specific practice to get used to natural speech, accents and unfamiliar topics. Keep separate sessions for timed tasks and official practice materials. If a live segment has already ended, choose the next suitable broadcast rather than planning around replay.
Find the station in English Radio and start with one segment that matches your interests.
